Texas is quite hot most of the year. Starting in March, temperatures can reach to the 90s, and this will go on until Thanksgiving – a great climate to grow turmeric. I get my rhizomes from Rainsong Farms. He sells them at the Tomball Farmers Market and gives advice on how to plant and grow. The leaves are beautiful and can also be harvested, dried and added to tea. Turmeric is fun to grow and seems pretty hardy. I have a lot in my frig right now and will give it away to friends. Some of it I’ll dehydrate, grind in a coffee grinder and put in capsules. I also use the ground turmeric when I bake sweet breads, adding a tablespoon or two.
